Our story
It started with a dairy and a weed
GoChar was not founded in a lab. It came out of practical work on farms in KwaZulu-Natal, where a tree everyone wanted gone turned out to be worth something.
Origins
2018 — regenerative work on the ground
Our journey began in 2018 through work linked to a large commercial dairy and the communities around it, with investment from a multinational food group. The brief was broad: regenerative agriculture, dairy productivity, water security, alien vegetation management, youth enterprise development, community training and feed innovation.
Working across those problems at once made something obvious that is easy to miss when you look at them separately. Black, green and silver wattle were being treated purely as an environmental problem to be cleared at a cost. They are also a dense, consistent, renewable source of carbon growing for free on land nobody is using.
Discovery through regeneration
Integrating wattle into dairy feed systems showed real economic and operational benefit while reducing dependence on bought-in feed. That opened the door to everything else: biochar production, carbon sequestration, water purification, soil regeneration and circular systems built around biomass that was previously burned in a pile.
At the same time, regenerative farming practices were transforming outcomes at Springfontein Dairy — improving profitability and resilience alongside the environmental result. That mattered. A regenerative system that costs a farmer money is a hobby, not a business.
Building the company
GoChar evolved out of that practical experience rather than a business plan. Today it combines biomass valorisation, pyrolysis technology, regenerative agriculture, carbon intelligence, community development, product innovation and agricultural modelling.
The company exists to turn carbon from an overlooked element into the foundation of resilient agricultural systems — and to prove that ecological work pays for itself when the outputs have a market.
