FAQ

Questions we get asked

What is biochar, exactly?

Wood heated in a low-oxygen chamber until everything volatile has been driven off, leaving a stable, highly porous carbon skeleton. That porosity is what lets it hold water, host soil microbes, and adsorb odour compounds and impurities.

Does PURIFi make unsafe water safe to drink?

No. It reduces chlorine, odours, organic impurities and sediment in water that is already potable. It does not kill or remove bacteria and viruses. If your water source is not safe, you need disinfection — boiling, chlorination or a certified purifier.

How do I prepare the water filter sticks?

Rinse thoroughly, boil for ten minutes, and let them cool completely before putting them in your water. Reboil every two to three weeks to refresh them.

How long do the air care pouches last?

Up to six months depending on how much odour and moisture they are dealing with. Put them in direct sunlight for two to three hours once a month to release trapped moisture and refresh the biochar.

Will the pouches leak, drip or stain?

No. The biochar adsorbs moisture into its pores rather than collecting it as water, so there is nothing to pool or empty. The pouches are sealed fabric — just avoid crushing them.

What do I do with a product when it is finished?

Open it, crush the contents, and work them into your compost, potting mix or garden soil. The carbon carries on doing useful work in the ground.

Why wattle?

Black, green and silver wattle are invasive across large parts of South Africa. They consume enormous volumes of water and displace indigenous vegetation. Using them as feedstock gives landowners an economic reason to keep clearing.
